Assignment 1 Self Selected Reading Book Report/ Newscast You will do a fictional News Story on the book you read over our Winter Break. Imagine you are writing the copy (script) for a network news anchor. You will write 1-2 pages, 12 pt. font, double spaced, Your report should cover the 5 W's, Who, What, When, Where, Why and/or How. Take a look at your nightly news to get an idea of the format. This will be worth 10 Extra Credit Points. An extra 5 will be awarded to any student who reads her/his report aloud in class. Assignment 17 Response Poem Recitation. After printing out a copy of your response poem for your teacher to read while you recite, you will say the whole poem in front of your teacher, either in front of the class (recommended for Slam Participants) or outside in the hallway. Due 2/20   

Assignment 18 George Washington and Jay-Z. After reading the handout in class On Line Version comparing the biographies of the two American Hustlers, you will write 3 Paragraphs: Paragraph 1 will contrast at least 3 of the obvious differences between the two men. Paragraph 2 will cover at least 3 of the similarities between them and Paragraph 3 will be your conclusion as to whether the two American Icons are more different or more similar supported by evidence from your paragraphs. Write in Complete Sentences!! Use bullet points or a Venn Diagram as a first step as needed.

Assignment 24 Gatsby Party evite. You will create an evite for one of Jay Gatsby's famous parties. For this project you will also write a 1 paragraph description of the pictures/symbols you chose to include on your invitation and why you chose them. Your evite and paragraph should either be posted or linked to your student web page. RUBRIC: A 10/10 will be given to projects that are turned in/posted on time, show an attention to detail in relating iconography from the novel to your invitation and contain a complete and grammatically correct paragraph explaining the symbols you chose and why you chose them as they pertain to the novel. Assignment 31 Gatsby Final Project: Option A You will write a five paragraph, descriptive essay discussing how techniques used in either of The Great Gatsby movies convey or help to express one of the major themes of the novel. The themes we have discussed in class include, Divine Justice, The American Dream, The Meaning of True Love, The Nature of  Identity as defined by ones' self and others, and Fitzgerald's commentary on American Society of the 1920's. The structure should be as follows:
Paragraph 1 ought to discuss the single theme you are going to address and at least 3 techniques employed by the film or films to convey this theme. The body paragraphs should relate each specific technique to the theme you chose. The conclusion should re-address the theme you chose and the techniques used to show this theme. Option B "The Death of Jay Gatsby" You will produce a newsreel style video or radio piece investigating Jay Gatsby's murder. Is it the deranged act of a grieving madman or is there more to it than that? You will submit a script before shooting/recording. Your output should be either mpeg4, Quicktime, .aiff or.wav. The final output file should either be posted to your site or posted as a link to youtube.

All 1st drafts of essays and scripts are due no later than Friday, 3/21. All final essays and projects are due Monday, April 7.

Assignment 32 Self Selected Novel This is your opportunity to get credit for all those great books you've been telling me about! With your choice of novel you must be able to: 1) Show me the book and tell me a little bit about it 2) Summarize the plot in a few paragraphs 3) Make a list of 50 vocabulary words referenced by page number with definitions and parts of speech 4) Discuss a theme of the novel with quotes from the text in an MLA style essay.

Part 1, A Book Check and brief discussion will be due on Wednesday, April 2nd.

Assignment 36  Social Activism Project Part 1: Mission Statement    As many of you have heard me say in class, language is not some abstraction to be puzzled over then put away. It is a tool to be used to effect change in the world. That was its first purpose and remains its most important. For the remainder of the semester you will be engaged in an activity that serves to shape our world in some way. The activity may be something big, like joining an environmental group tackling global climate change, or something smaller in scope but no less important, like helping an elderly neighbor on a regular basis. 

For this assignment you will write a paragraph describing the activity you intend to undertake. Over the remainder of the semester, you will submit four blog entries to your web site describing your involvement and how your activity is impacting you. Towards the end of the semester you will write a reflective essay about your experience. The first part of the assignment is your descriptive paragraph or Mission Statement. Due Friday, April 4

Assignment 47 Self Selected Novel Plot Summary  The thematic expository essay which you will start next week ought not to be a summary of the plot of the novel except as it pertains to the theme. For this reason, you will summarize the plot of the novel separately. Here's how:

While you're writing it, think about who, what, when, where. Then briefly touch on why. I don't need to know about all the details.
Make sure you explain from cover to cover. Start with the first chapter and end with the last. You want to inform on the whole book. Due 5/5

Assignment 51
Literary Theme Essay. Like your Crucible essay last semester and your Gatsby essay this semester, you will write an essay on a theme in the novel you chose to read. As the last part of your Self Selected reading project, you will organize your essay around the theme you stated in your introductory paragraph. This essay will have no length requirement in terms of number of paragraphs but may be constructed in a classic 5 paragraph style, with an introduction that states your thesis and introduces the evidence that supports your thesis and subsequent supporting paragraphs. Final Exam Your Final Exam will be in two parts. The first part will be a reading comprehension test to see how well you are reading and thinking using a previously unseen essay. The questions should resemble the mock test we did in class. Due 5/21. The second part of your final will be an in class reflective essay on the social activism you have been blogging about. You will take part 2 of the final during your scheduled final day. Good Luck!!
